Landfill Tax Information

Landfill tax was introduced in October 1996 whereupon £7 per tonne was charged through the landfill operators for every tonne buried in a landfill site. The idea was to try and encourage more recycling and raise more revenues for the Government, whilst being mindful of recycling targets being imposed by the EU to all member states of which the UK was a long way behind many countries in mainland Europe.

Landfill tax sits at £48 per tonne in 2010 (an increase of over 685% in 14 years !) and will reach £80 per tonne by 2014 because the Chancellor has prescribed a set annual increase of £8 per tonne through the budget as a ”minimum” increase in each fiscal year.

Between 1998 and 2009 the Treasury received £7.6bn from this tax.

To put this into perspective for our customers, a 1100 litre wheeled bin filled with commercial wastes weighs an average of 65kilograms (according to ESA) and therefore at the 2010 landfill tax rate will cost you £3.12 for each bin for each time it is lifted.

This charge will be passed on to you by your collector before he adds the other charges such as; landfill charges, transport charges, bin charges, drivers wages etc.

If WMR cannot increase your recycling and reduce your costs then you have lost nothing but you will certainly have gained some environmental knowledge!
